Becky made a smaller version of Lorna's Vine for her class. It has a finished size of 55 1/2 x 55 1/2.
You need the book to make this quilt but we are happy to give you the yardage and cutting instructions for this smaller version. Click here to open the pdf. You can print these instructions and/or save them to your computer.
We have always loved Amish quilts, but we love applique too! We began to wonder: What if the Amish had done more applique? What would it look like? Would these quilters have filled the open spaces with applique to balance the piecing? Would they have substituted applique for the piecing, preserving the open spaces in the quilt? We imagined that they might have done both as you'll see in the quilts in this book.
In addition to the 5 larger quilts in this book, there are 8 quilt fragments. We had an inspiration when we were working on this book. Imagine an old quilt that has been so well-loved that only a part of - a fragment - of it remains. These leftover bits may be only a fraction of the whole quilt, but the fragment of the design can quite interesting standing alone.
We used hand dyed fabric for the quilts in our book. Look for links (at left) that will take you Ricky Tims' site and to Cherrywood for hand dyed fabric. You can also use solids off the bolt.

Here's how you make the center "wheel" off-the-block. This particular wheel is going into a smaller version of the Lorna's Vine quilt, above. The block it goes on has a finished size of 6" x 6".
The wheels in the center of the Aunt Millie's Garden blocks are smaller but the construction technique is the same.
I wrote notes to go with each image, explaining what I'm doing in each step. Run your cursor over "Notes" on the bottom right side of the slideshow and they should show up.
